LDI Scholarships are open to highly qualified graduate students at the LDI who are registered full-time at McGill University in a research training program leading to a MSc, a PhD or a Postdoctoral degree. They are made possible thanks to the support of the following generous donors: Desjardins Financial Group, TD Bank, and the Dubrovsky Family.

The LDI is committed to the ideal that research excellence is greatly enhanced by ensuring equity of opportunity in research and every graduate that met the merit criteria were funded this year. Winners of the postdoc competition were selected by Benjamin Martin and Hoi Yun Oriana Yu; those of the PhD competition by Loic Binan and Lorraine Chalifour and those of the master’s competition by Colin Crist and Sabrina Wurzba. Chantal Autexier and Michael Witcher, Associate Director for Faculty Development at the LDI, coordinated the process. Criteria used in the selection process were weighted differently for MSc, PhD and postdoc students, and included: Academic Record, Awards and Studentships/Fellowships, Peer-Reviewed Publications, Presentations (Oral and Poster), Research Project and Training Environment/Expectations.

Hossein Jafarzadeh receives McGill MedStar Award

Congratulations to Hossein Jafarzadeh, PhD candidate in Medical Physics supervised by Shirin Enger, Principal Investigator at the LDI and Full Professor in the Department of Oncology at McGill University, for receiving the McGill MedStar Award from the McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FHMS). The award recognizes the publication, “A data-driven approach to model spatial dose characteristics for catheter placement of high dose-rate brachytherapy,” published in Computers in Biology and Medicine, that Hossein led as co-first author in close collaboration with Björn Morén, Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics, Linköping University, Linköping, Sweden. The McGill MedStar Awards recognize excellence in a research article published as first author by a trainee in the FHMS.

Islam Elkholi listed in the MIT Technology Review Innovators under 35 for 2025 (MENA region)

Islam Elkholi, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Oncology at McGill University supervised by LDI Principal Investigator April Rose, was selected for the Innovators Under 35 by MIT Technology Review Arabia for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA 2025). This award was bestowed to Islam Elkholi in recognition for revealing the PIK3C3 protein as a potential therapeutic target in breast cancer metastasis and the vision of scaling and building on this finding. The overarching goal of Islam Elkholi’s research work is to define therapeutic targets and/or prognostic approaches to prevent and/or halt cancer metastasis, the leading cause of death in cancer patients.

Claire Adams receives Postdoctoral Fellowship Salary Award from the Arthritis Society of Canada

Claire Adams, a postdoctoral fellow supervised by Brett Thombs, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Patient-Oriented Disease Management and Preventative Health Care and Senior Investigator at the LDI, received an Arthritis Society Canada Postdoctoral Fellowship Salary Award in partnership with scleroderma patient partner organizations in the amount of $80,000 over 2 years for a project entitled Improving Dissemination of Research Results to Patients: A Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network Project. Claire Adams will explore whether co-presentation of research by patients and researchers improves the communication of results to patients.

Sébastien Quetin obtains prestigious Jean Pouliot Award from AQPMC

Sébastien Quetin, a PhD student in Biological & Biomedical Engineering at McGill University who works in the laboratory of Shirin Enger, Principal Investigator at the LDI, obtained the prestigious Jean Pouliot Award from the Association québécoise des physicien(ne)s médicaux cliniques (AQPMC) for the best-published paper in 2024. His article was entitled Deep learning for high-resolution dose prediction in high dose rate brachytherapy for breast cancer treatment. The Jean Pouliot Award is given each year to a student in medical physics from the province of Quebec for the publication of an article demonstrating the cutting-edge research in medical physics being done in the province.

Congratulations to Juliet Guay, PhD student supervised by LDI Principal Investigator Mark Basik, who received the GREAT (Graduate Research Enhancement and Travel Award) travel award from McGill’s Department of Experimental Medicine to attend the European Society For Medical Oncology Targeted Anticancer Therapies (ESMO TAT) Congress 2025 in Paris. She presented the results of her PhD project entitled Targeting ATR and PKMYT1 to overcome carboplatin resistance in triple-negative breast cancer patient-derived models.

Congratulations to Mirta Dumancic, Postdoctoral fellow in medical physics at McGill University supervised by LDI Principal Investigator Shirin Enger, for obtaining a travel award from the Canadian Brachytherapy Society to present their project entitled Comparative Analysis of Brachytherapy Utilization Across Canadian Provinces from 2011-2020 at the Curietherapies Conference held at Club St-James in Montreal on May 15-17, 2025. Mirta was also the recipient of the Young Investigator Award at the conference following her oral presentation of the same project.

Juliet Guay and Elias Maldonado receive the McGill Emerald Key Award

Juliet Guay and Elias Maldonado, PhD students supervised by LDI Principal Investigators Mark Basik and Josie Ursini-Siegel respectively, received the Emerald Key Award at the McGill University Scarlet Key Society Pinning Ceremony on March 26, 2025, for their student contributions to sustainability on campus. Juliet and Elias successfully institutionalized an SPF-funded polystyrene (Styrofoam) recycling initiative at the LDI. Through the Green Lab Initiatives (GLI) at the LDI, which Juliet co-founded, they have also led outreach events and programs to recycle PPE and reuse ice packs from labs. Thanks to their efforts, the LDI has recycled over 11,000 liters of polystyrene and 20,000 PPE items.

Samantha B. Shapiro is first author of a study showing that GLP-1 diabetes drugs are not linked to heightened suicidality risk

Use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, which include Ozempic®, Rybelsus® and other widely used drugs, to treat type 2 diabetes is not associated with an increased risk of suicidality compared with two other groups of diabetes drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors and SGLT-2 inhibitors, finds a large study of UK health data. The study led by Laurent Azoulay, Senior investigator at the LDI and first author Samantha B. Shapiro, a doctoral student in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health at McGill University working in Pr. Azoulay’s laboratory, was published by The BMJ on February 26.

Sarah Ghezelbash, PhD student in Clinical and Translational Research under the supervision of LDI Principal Investigators Philippe Lefrançois and Mark Basik, is the recipient of the Graduate Oral Presentation Award at the third annual International Forum on Research Excellence (IFoRE) held in Washington, DC, on November 16, 2024. Over 200 high school, undergraduate, and graduate students competed with research presentations in oral and poster format. A judging committee of Sigma Xi members evaluated the presenters on their scientific thought, methods, and communication skills. Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society is the world’s largest multidisciplinary honor society for scientists and engineers.

LDI trainees obtain Tremplin Ambassador 2024-2025 award

Open to supervisors, postdocs, and employees from the RI-MUHC, Structural Biology Research Center, Douglas Research Center and LDI, the Tremplin Ambassador Award program provides funding (up to $2,000 per project) for skills and career development activities to support trainees’ professional growth. This year, LDI trainees were recipients of this award:
  • Kathryn Bozek, PhD student, and the LDI Trainee Committee, for the McGill Centre for Translational Research in Cancer (MCTRC) Translational Research Podcast Series, which will start in December 2024.
This award is a token of recognition, honoring these exceptional individuals for their leadership and dedication to fostering the professional growth of biomedical trainees.

Jennifer Maxwell receives Phil Gold Scientific Award

Jennifer Maxwell, a PhD student in April Rose‘s laboratory, is the recipient of the Phil Gold Scientific Award within the framework of the Prix des Grands Sages initiative of the Chief Scientist of Quebec. These awards are given to one doctoral student in each of the three FRQ sectors (FRQS, FRQNT, FRQSC) on the basis of their exceptional doctoral application in the FRQ doctoral awards competition in May 2024. As a recipient of this award, Jennifer will receive a $10,000 supplement for each of the 4-years of her FRQS doctoral award ($40,000 total).

LDI Scholarships are open to highly qualified graduate students at the LDI who are registered full-time at McGill University in a research training program leading to a MSc, a PhD or a Postdoctoral degree. They are made possible thanks to the support of the following generous donors: Desjardins Financial Group, TD Bank, the Dubrovsky Family, and Galina Dorfman.

The LDI is committed to the ideal that research excellence is greatly enhanced by ensuring equity of opportunity in research and every graduate that met the merit criteria were funded this year. Winners of the postdoc competition were selected by Melissa Henry and Shirin Enger; those of the PhD competition by Volker Blank and Christel Renoux and those of the master’s competition by April Rose and Kostas Pantopoulos. Chantal Autexier and Michael Witcher, Associate Director for Faculty Development at the LDI, coordinated the process. Criteria used in the selection process were weighted differently for MSc, PhD and postdoc students, and included: Academic Record, Awards and Studentships/Fellowships, Peer-Reviewed Publications, Presentations (Oral and Poster), Research Project and Training Environment/Expectations.
